Hey ladies! Today I am bringing you a sunless tanning tutorial featuring JERGENS® Natural Glow® Daily Moisturizer and JERGENS® Natural Glow® Instant Sun® Sunless Tanning Mousse.  Those of you that know me personally know that I used to love to lay out in the summers and go tanning at tanning salons. You need a tan for swimsuit season, right?? Well, after finding precancerous moles that were developing from these tanning habits, as well as my dad actually get skin cancer on his nose, I decided I need to lay off the fake baking.  Like really.  Since then, I have been using sunless tanning to get a nice golden glow throughout the year. So this post is really something I feel strongly about.  Use your sunscreen ladies!!

One of the things I really like about the JERGENS® Natural Glow products is that they are readily available. You don’t have to live close to some fancy store! I was able to pick these up at my local Walmart.  They are located on the edge of the Cosmetics aisles, next to all of the lotions. Here’s a pic for you visual learners :)

What You Will Need:

Have all of these ready before you get started:

Step 1: Prep your skin!

Before using any sunless tanning products, you need to make sure your skin will absorb it correctly! If you have any dry patches, they will always soak up the color more than the rest of your skin.  ALWAYS exfoliate before you sunless tan!  This will ensure a nice, even skin color and it is well worth the few extra minutes in the shower or bath.

Step 2:  Put lotion on dry areas

Like I mentioned above, dry skin will absorb color deeper than other areas of your body.  Unfortunately, no matter how much you soak or exfoliate, there are a few places on your skin that will always absorb more color.  To prevent this from happening, you want to put lotion on these areas beforehand.  This includes your hands/wrists, knuckles, elbows, knees, ankles, and feet.  For some reason, my ankles ALWAYS absorb the most color, so I am really careful to put extra lotion on them.  Putting the lotion on first makes it so less color absorbs into the skin, and it all evens out nicely in the end! Make sure none of these places feel dry at all before you start!  Sometimes I even put a second coat of lotion on my ankles, just in case.

Step 3: Sunless Tanning Mousse

Here is the fun part!  Put on your disposable or latex gloves.  Wearing these gloves helps ensure your hands don’t soak up too much color- remember, your hands are one of the areas we need to be careful with!

Take the JERGENS® sunless tanning mousse and pump it out on to your hands.  For my calves, I used two pumps, and two pumps for my thighs.  On my arms, I used one pump on my forearms and one on my upper arms.  This can vary depending on how deep of a color you want to achieve!

Rub the foam into the your skin in even, circular motions until it is absorbed.  Work on just one area at a time (e.g., your left calf, then your left thigh, etc.).  NOTE: I do NOT put product directly onto the “dry areas” we have already talked about.  They do NOT need much color in order to match the rest of your skin.  Rather, after I have rubbed the product into the skin on my calves, for example, I take the leftover product remaining on my gloves and lightly go over my ankles, feet, knees, etc.  That is ALL THE PRODUCT THEY NEED.  Really.  Don’t put more on them! They will absorb enough with just that much product.  DON’T ADD MORE!!  My thought process with sunless tanner is that you can always go back and add, but once it is on, you can’t take it off.  So, err on the safe side here!

Once you have done your legs and arms and you are ready to do your hands, remove the gloves and just rub the extra product from your arms down across your wrists and the back of your hands. You really don’t need more product here.  If you absolutely feel like you do, try maybe half a pump for both hands, and that is all you need!  Once you are done, wash your hands with soap!  Your palms will absorb color like crazy, you want to rinse them as quick as possible.

Note:  JERGENS® Natural Glow products are just what their name suggests- a NATURAL GLOW.  This product will not make you five shades darker in one round!  It will give you a nice, natural, healthy looking glow.  If you want a deeper shade, keep reapplying until you get where you want to be. This is actually what I like about this product- that it is buildable!  It leaves little room for messing up! Some products go on so dark and you can’t reverse them! (That scene from Bride Wars is flashing through my mind haha)  JERGENS® really allows you to decide how dark you want to go, and will leave you with a very natural looking color.

If you want to go darker after your first round, wait at least 5 minutes before applying your second.  I did do 2 layers of the JERGENS® sunless tanning mousse in these photos, for reference.

Step 4: Daily Glow Moisturizer

JERGENS® also has this great daily glow moisturizer that contains sunless tanning agents as well. This lotion is meant to be used daily until you achieve the color level you want.  Once you attain that color, you reapply 1-2 times a week to maintain it.  I like to use the JERGENS® sunless tanning mousse in conjunction with the JERGENS® daily glow moisturizer to keep great, long lasting results.   So, after I apply my sunless tanning mousse, I finish up with the daily glow moisturizer, and keep putting it on every day after.  Doing this helps in two ways- firstly, the lotion keeps adding a layer of color each day, and second, keeping your skin moisturized will help your tan to last as long as possible and keep your skin looking and feeling great.

When applying the JERGENS® daily glow moisturizer, you don’t need to be as careful as when using the mousse.  I used gloves because I already had them out during the tutorial, but when I am applying daily, I usually just use my hands and am careful to rinse them well afterwards.  I follow the same steps as above- apply to areas like your calves, thighs, forearms, etc., rubbing in circular motions, and use the left over product to carefully go over the dry areas (if at all).  Once you have done this, rinse your hands well, and you are good to go!

Before and After:

Between these two photos, I applied two coats of the JERGENS® sunless tanning mousse and one coat of the JERGENS® daily glow moisturizer.  I also waited about 4 hours between these photos.  The color did come even a little darker by that evening!  I repeat the sunless tanning mousse once a week, making sure to exfoliate before, and I use the daily glow moisturizer every day to maintain.  The longer you use the products, the better results you will see! So- do you want skin cancer?! Didn’t think so!! I challenge you to try using sunless tanner this year and to wear your sunscreen! Just try it, okay? Go try it right now, and get some JERGENS® Natural Glow products right here! Also, let me know in the comment below on what you think about sunless tanning- have you tried it? Did you like it? Love this! How long does one application last? Will I need to reapply every couple weeks, etc.?

I used Jergens about 5 years or so ago and when I perspired it came off all over my clothes. I was on vacation and my white top looked like I spilled tea on myself. Haven’t tried it since. Maybe now it is improved!

I use the jergens moisturizer and facial glow daily. I love it! Natural looking results at a good price. I was afraid the facial cream would cause breakouts, but it hasn’t. I’ve been using it for over two weeks now.

Hello Keara, i was wondering if the Jergens cream comes off when you shave and how often do you exfoliate and restart the process you showed us? Thanks.

Hi! I put the lotion on every day, and I do the mousse 1 or 2 times a week. That way the new skin is getting color too, so when I exfoliate it isn’t a drastic color change!

Hey there! I love the Jergens Instant Sun! It works best when applied with a tanning mitt, that way you can also get the tops of your hands as well. I am going to try the Jergens tan extender with it, have you tried this?
